KYIV, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Russia carried out new drone attacks on Ukraine overnight and killed two people in shelling of the southern city of Kherson on Thursday morning, Ukrainian officials said. Nine of the drones that were destroyed were shot down over the Kirovohrad region, regional governor Andriy Raikovych said. The Kherson region governor, Oleksandr Prokudin, gave few details of the shelling of Kherson but said a man and a woman had been killed, and another man had been wounded. A 64-year-old woman was also wounded in morning shelling of the southern town of Nikopol in the central region of Dnipropetrovsk, regional governor Serhiy Lysak said. Although Moscow denies deliberately targeting civilians, many have been killed in attacks that have hit residential areas as well as energy, defence, port, grain and other facilities.

The village and other parts of the region were seized by Russia early in the war and recaptured by Ukraine in September 2022. The village is only 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Kupiansk, a key focus of the Russian military effort. Ukraine’s air force said that the country’s air defenses intercepted 24 out of 29 Iranian-made drones that Russia launched at the Odesa, Mykolaiv and Kirovohrad regions. Roman Starovoit said that Ukrainian drones attacked infrastructure facilities in several areas, resulting in power cuts. "Fighter aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units and mobile fire groups were engaged to repel the attack," the military said on the Telegram messaging app. The military said Ukraine's southern Mykolaiv, Odesa and central Kirovohrad regions had been targeted. It said Russian also launched missiles at Mykolaiv. "Our air defence forces did an excellent job," Odesa regional governor Oleh Kiper said on Telegram.

CNN —Amid the raging war and constant threat of Russian missiles, a successful heart transplant has been performed on a 6-year-old girl in Kyiv, authorities with the Heart Institute of Ukraine’s Ministry of Health announced on Monday. It was the first time a heart transplant had been performed in Ukraine on children so young, the institute said. “The operation went smoothly, the girl was extubated two hours after the operation,” Todurov said in a post on his official Facebook page. Ukrainian Transplant Coordination CenterThe Heart Institute released images from the operation showing the mother of the boy whose heart was donated standing by the girl’s bedside. The Heart Institute has purchased special generators so operations can continue during blackouts, and it has an autonomous water supply.

May 18 (Reuters) - Air raid alerts were declared throughout the territory of Ukraine early on Thursday and the military warned of possible Russian missile strikes in a wide arc extending from Kyiv to central regions and the south. An hour after the warnings were issued, the Ukrainian Armed Forces Telegram channel told residents of the capital to remain in shelters. Warnings were issued for a range of other regions, including Zhytomyr west of the capital and Kirovohrad, Cherkassy and Dnipropetrovsk in central Ukraine. The warnings also extended north of Kyiv and to the south and west to Vinnystia, Khmelnitskyi and Chernivtsi regions. Other Telegram channels warned of possible strikes in the central region of Poltava and further south in Mykolaiv region.

For much of the winter, the war in Ukraine settled into a slow-moving but exceedingly violent fight along a jagged 600-mile-long frontline in the southeast. Now, both Ukraine and Russia are poised to go on the offensive. They are looking for vulnerabilities, hoping to exploit gaps, and setting the stage for what Ukraine warns could be Moscow’s most ambitious campaign since the start of the war. Ukraine must now defend against the Russian assault without exhausting the resources it needs to mount an offensive of its own. President Vladimir V.
